Superintendent Message 2010-11 PDF Print E-mail
August 2010

Dear Parents, Students and Staff:

Welcome to the 2010/11 school year!  This will be a year filled with both challenges and opportunities.  Our challenges continue to come from massive state cutbacks in funding.  The opportunities come from the talent, excitement, and innovative approaches that our staff and community bring to our schools each and every day.

We are a community in every sense of the word.  It is our community that has supported our students through the passage of Measure “R” and Measure “G” bonds bringing upgraded and expanded facilities to every site.  It is our community that has supported our students through the passage of Measure “E” which has prevented further cuts to critical programs such as counseling and elementary science.  It is our community, through our four cities, that has come together in a collaborative effort to support expanded technology resources at each of our schools.  And, it is our community, through the Las Virgenes Educational Foundation, that has continued to support our students through our highly successful summer school program.

As part of our efforts to continue to integrate technology, while at the same time becoming more environmentally sensitive, our Legal Notification Handbook is now provided via our website.  Each family can receive a copy by visiting the website (www.lvusd.org) or, if you would like one emailed to you individually, please contact our Educational Services Office at (818) 878-5218.

I encourage you to read the handbook carefully and ask questions about anything that may be of concern to you.  The handbook contains contact information as well as the 2010/11 district calendar.  it also contains a wide variety of required notifications including pesticide use; special education rights; military recruitment on high school campuses; along with other general policies and procedures which will likely affect you and/or your child(ren) at some time during their school career.

Our District's mission statement, as well as our "District Dynamics," point to the focus and vision of our Board of Education for supporting every one of our students for success as "21st century learners".  I urge you to become involved in our schools in support of our students.  Our district website contains information on numerous programs as well as upcoming events.  I encourage you to make this your "home page" and partner with us in supporting the most valuable asset we have -- our children.  I hold bimonthly community forums and look forward to meeting you during the upcoming school year.  Thank you for joining me and the other 1,100 employees of our District in "doing great things for kids!"

Sincerely,
Donald M. Zimring, Ph.D.
Superintendent
